Lunch on Wheels

Regardless of your ethnicity, taste and budget, there is more than hotdog and burgers in the District of Columbia. Since the DC government has lifted its restrictions on new food cart licenses, weekday lunching has become internationalized, thanks to the influx of new food trucks bringing everything from Indian curry, tacos, Korean BBQ to cupcakes.

These new trucks have also learned to use Facebook or Twitter to keep their followers abreast of daily whereabouts.

Sauca’s high-tech truck serves flatbread wraps such as coconut-sauced Pork Banh Mi, Mango Pico, hot chili sauce Mexicali Fish Taco, and the cardamom/curry “Mumbai Butter Chicken”. There are also “toffles” – waffles with toppings. Food is prepared in a central kitchen and then heated and assembled on the truck, which boasts of free Wi-Fi, an international phone and a 37-inch TV screen for karaoke for patrons who like to break into song while waiting.

A new addition is On the Fly, an eco-vending smartkart serving healthier versions of tacos made of pork and chicken. Food is sourced locally, packaged in ecofriendly wrap, and hand delivered to customers with a smile. Meals are served hot, made with natural, organic, and chemical free ingredients. Company chef Jordan Lichman comes from the Inn at Little Washington, so it’s no surprise that these tacos are cut above the rest.

The Fojol Bros. of Merlindia’s circus-looking truck serves delicious and healthy meals with no preservatives. They offer palak paneer, cauliflower and potatoes, eggplant and a tasty chicken curry served over basmati rice. The Fojol Bros. also provide locally-made Merlindian products ranging from Ababa Du’s Spicy Cyclones to Mewsh’s Mango Lassi pops.

For something Asian, try the Korean BBQ cart at the corner of L and 14th for bulgogi, bibimbap and kimchee. The portions are generous with just the right amount of spice.

And keep your eyes peeled for Curbside Cupcakes, a mobile cupcake company serving Washington DC. Look for the pink cupcake truck Downtown and around Capitol Hill bringing cupcake heaven such as peanut butter chocolate right to your door.
