On the 28th of September the Philippines’ bet, Megan Young, was crowned Miss World 2013 in Bali, Indonesia. The 23-year old film student made history for being the first ever Filipina to win the coveted blue crown in the 63 years since Miss World began.
Before competing internationally, the pride of Olongapo has bested 24 other contestants for the title of Miss World Philippines 2013 in Manila last August 18, 2013. And just weeks after, Megan Young bested 127 contestants from all over the globe and became the “most beautiful woman in the world”.
During the competition in Bali, Megan also placed in three of the five challenge events: first in the “Top Model” competition, fourth in the “Multimedia Challenge”, and fifth in the “Beach Beauty” contest.
In her post on the Miss World – Philippines Facebook page, Megan wrote that before going on stage for the “Top Model” competition, she slipped and fell flat on her bum. Later on, after coming out on top in this category, she called her clumsy moment a blessing in disguise. The 5’ 7” Young even added, “I’m so happy that I was chosen because I didn’t expect it at all since I’m not as tall as most girls in the competition. I guess, “thinking tall” worked for me after all.”
Not only did she place in three of the five challenges, Megan Young was also one of the selected few to perform a dance live from their respective countries during Miss World’s “Dances of the World” segment. The dance that Miss World Philippines performed is the Singkil in a striking costume coupled with a pair of golden fans. From sporting the Singkil fans to the Balinese Sandalwood Fan given to Miss World 2013, it was as if Megan was truly meant to win the title. Instead of receiving flowers, the top 3 women of the pageant were given sandalwood fans to reflect the host country’s national motto “Unity in Diversity”.
And on the subject of Unity and Diversity, Megan Young dazzled the spectators in her winning answer during the Q&A portion of the pageant. When asked, “Why should you be Miss World?” Young answered, “I treasure a core value of humanity, and that guides people why they act the way they do. I will use this to show other people how they can understand each other… as one, we can help society.”
After winning the crown, Miss World 2013 has since then received a warm welcome during her homecoming. She visited the Congress, met President Benigno Aquino III, and received the Congressional Medal of Distinction during her visit to the Philippine House of Representatives. She also went to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) to visit young patients in the pediatric ward.
With a good head on her shoulders and gorgeous looks, Megan is sure to give justice in representing not only the title of Miss World, but also of being a true beauty with a purpose.
